Hi.

I am looking at a house in the 900 block of John Street. I'm wondering how safe that area is for a single woman living alone. I've heard ok things about the cathedral district but iffy things about the near west side.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Default joliet

Aside from going to Joliet Catholic for about six months years ago and occasionally heading to the Casinos and bars downtown Joliet from time to time I dont know much about Joliet.

Personally however with the exception of the areas near Rt 59 and Caton Farm that are essentially plainfield I wouldn't live in Joliet. I know there's other decent areas besides this area but thats just my preference.

The only seedy areas on the near west side are behind St. Johns neighborhood- Evergreen Terrace. That's the Joliet housing projects.

Otherwise, be wary while in St. Pat's neighborhood. The rest is just fine. I graduated from University of St. Francis and lived in Joliet for a year afterwards. You'll be fine.

I live in a several unit rental house in the Cathedral District of Joliet and we've had a string of thug neighbors in our building, but it seems like our building may be the "bad" one on the block. Most of the houses are owner-occupied, well-kept, and the neighborhood generally seems safe. It is ethnically and economically diverse. I wouldn't buy east of Wilcox... but the 900 block of John seems like an okay spot.

Interesting that you say this, between the N/S W/E quadrant of Glenwood/Jefferson and Raynor/30 (Center) there are spectacular homes. I would not hesitate to live in the historic upper bluff area at all.

Although, I do understand the wariness as you approach center st and the apartment complex right there. I used to ride my bicycle around at night and there would be some thuggish looking kids hanging around; this was around 11 pm.
