My brother was cremated in Atlanta and his wife never informed his family in Chicago (daughter,mother and siblings) that he had died until weeks after the fact. The family is livid. They desperately need to have closure for the loss of their loved one. Are their any services available that could serve to host a memorial gathering where a group of people could ritualize a ceremony to celebrate his life in a personal way? He was not religious and a church setting is not a option.

We had a (non-religious) memorial service like that for my grandpa when he passed away at a nearby
mausoleum in one of their chapel rooms. He had also been cremated, so no burial services were necessary. It was just a very personalized memorial, and we all got up to speak about his life and how he touched each of us. We also had a big picture board of various pictures of him to remember his life. He had served during WWII, so there was also a flag presentation and Taps by a member of the US Navy. I've been to lots of religious funerals, but this was the most touching and personalized memorial service by far.
I'm so sorry to hear about your brother. I would think that your options are wide open. You could host something (depending on the number of people) at someone's house, at a restaurant, at a hall, or in a chapel room at any cemetary/mausoleum. The plus side to doing it at a chapel room, is that they can have a person to help coordinate the memorial program for you and act as a master of ceremonies.

Most people don't know that you can have a Memorial Service without having a funeral. (A funeral is when you have the body there....and usually you are paying a funeral director big bucks to have the body there.)
