Hello-looking to purchase a home within a reasonable commute to Oak Park in a good, safe area. How is the commute from Elmhurst and Downers Grove. Any other areas that would be recommended and still keep house cost below 500K? Thank you!

From Downers Grove you would have to take I-88 to I-290 (the Ike). It can get pretty jammed in rush hour going both ways. It genereally gets real bad right past Oak Park going east in any time of time, and the evening commute west tends to thin out past Maywood. The commute could be anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour each way depending on traffic.

From Elmhurst, depending on where you lived, you could take only I-290 if you lived in south Elmhurst, or if north Elmhurst I-290 to I-294. However, Elmhurst is close enough to take local roads from Oak Park. Not sure where your office is located, but North Avenue and Lake/St. Charles Road go directly from Oak Park to Elmhurst.

Other western suburbs to look into are North Riverside and Lyons which are both near Harlem Avenue going straight to Oak Park. If you want near Elmhurst, look into Villa Park.

Forget the Ike, at least this year during construction. Harlem is also a pain, but all right if you only have to go a few miles. How come nobody has mentioned the UP-W line? It will get you from Wheaton to Oak Park in about half an hour, and the fare is only about $120 a month.

How about....OAK PARK? You can still find a decent house IN OAK PARK for under 500K and you'll have zero commute!

Why would you commute to Oak Park? Just live there. Or if you refuse to live in Oak Park, live nearby in River Forest, Riverside, Brookfield. Or if you don't mind a working class vibe, Elmwood Park and River Grove are still very safe communities. If you want a newer house, go west along the Union Pacific West Line. Any of the towns from Elmhurst on westward are generally very safe--with the exception of West Chicago (not the "West Side of Chicago", but an actual town called West Chicago). I think Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn, and Wheaton are quite nice.
