Does anyone know the admissions differences between Quest Academy (Palatine) and the self-contained gifted program at Hough Elementary in District 220 (Barrington)? My child was IQ tested recently (SB-5) and the score is enough to get into Quest, but I don't know what is needed for Hough. If anyone has been through this before and can offer insight, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!

P.S. Also, if anyone has a good website(s) to point to re how to understand/interpret the SB-5 score, that would also be really helpful. Thanks so much.

Have you considered calling Hough and asking them?

This is what I found from an online search.
Quote:
Students in grades 3 – 5 are identified to participate in our extended program through demonstrated aptitude and classroom achievement in either or both language arts and mathematics.
The program identifies our district’s upper five percent of third through fifth grade students who are intellectually and/or academically gifted for pull out instruction at Grove as well as at every elementary school.
The upper one percent of intellectually talented students in third through fifth grades may participate in a self-contained class located at Hough Street School.
Also, you could email the gifted ed specialist (info on her webpage (http://ww2.barrington220.org/21222033144235493/site/default.asp - broken link) here). Sounds fairly competitive to get into the self contained class if you're looking at the upper 1% of intellectually talented students in a district that probably has quite a few brainiacs. At least they have services for the top 5% as well though.

Default Have you tried Science & Arts Academy?

In my experience, Science & Arts Academy in Des Plaines is a best bet for gifted ed in the area. It is right off of 294 so the access is easy - I carpool with several other families from Barrington and Hoffman Estates. Here is their website: Science & Arts Academy

District 220 has a pretty active group of students and well informed parents:
