Looks like the city of Lake Forest is studying the possibility of adding an Amtrak stop on the Hiawatha line that runs between Chicago & Milwaukee. One reason is the rash of Amtrak accidents that have occurred at this stop. Another reason is to provide another commuting option from Milwaukee into Lake County & vice versa. I could see the stop providing a quick express ride from Lake Forest into the city unlike many of the Metra runs which have many stops along the way. Amtrak's main concern I think will be with maintaining their quick 1.5 hour travel time from Milwaukee to Chicago. Right now the only stops are downtown Milwaukee, Milwaukee Airport (pretty new stop), Sturtevant just west of Racine, Glenview (IL) & Chicago. This would be Lake County's first Amtrak stop ever if they do land this eventually. Here's the link to the article from the Pioneer Press:

I have mixed feelings on this issue. While it would be a good option for Lake County residents going to Milwaukee (including the airport) it would also add to overall travel time between Chicago and Milwaukee. It would definitely be the best Lake County location for a new stop, as it has good parking, and would allow the best transfers from the Milwaukee-North line. Historical note: Rondout is right at the junction, but that station was closed years ago due to insufficient access and parking. I am not sure this will correct the problem of pedestrians violating the crossing, since some Metra trains and all freight trains go through the train without stopping. More enforcement is the only answer to that.
