Hi everyone, I'm a young professional (mid-20's) moving up to the Chicago area in a few months for a job. I'll be traveling back and forth between the Wood Dale area and Marengo area (mostly Marengo). I want to find a nice city near both that has enough going on in the evenings and weekends (i.e. meet people my age). Unfortunately, living in the city is too far for an everyday commute (I'm thinking 1 hour tops).

Any suggestions? I've considered Schaumberg, Elgin, Rockford, but honestly I'm clueless. Thank you in advance for any suggestions or advice you might have!

Wood Dale and Marengo are about an hour apart. I don't know about Rockford, but they probably have a more vibrant downtown than many of the Chicago suburbs. Elgin is a bedroom community in some parts and not very nice in other parts. Schaumburg and Arlington Heights are your closest options because Marengo is so far away. Most suburbs do not have active social scenes, save for a select few near the city (Evanston and Oak Park). Arlington Heights has one of the more active suburban downtowns and Schaumburg has a few bars in the area, but nothing compared to the city.

Wow! is all I can say to that scenario. Maybe Crystal Lake, but the commute to Wood Dale would be horrible. I'd be tempted to just live in Marengo and make the best of it.

I'd go for Schaumburg if you really want to live close to nightlife. I'm not into nightlife, so I don't know what's out there, but I would think it's got plenty of options depending on what you like. The commute to Marengo isn't going to be too great. I personally prefer to live within 30 minutes of work, currently I work at home, can't beat that commute.

I would not want to be making the commute between wood dale and marengo. there is just no good drive to marengo. It is growing out that way, but the drive just sucks. I would also pick schaumburg as for a young 20 something, there are restaurants, bars, shopping, healthclubs, activities etc. good luck
