What are the best suburbs in which to find a nice home with a bit of yard (ideally around $750,000 but could go up to $1 million), good public schools, low crime rates, commute by train to downtown no longer than a 30 minute ride? Thank you.

The OP has not provided enough details. There are plenty of threads that list the qualities of the 'burbs mentioned and others, but without knowing WHERE the OP will be working, HOW they prefer to get to work, WHY they want / need a house of 3500 sq ft, WHAT kind of community they expect to go along with that house / price point, and WHO will be living with them (little kids, high schoolers, college aged kids, parent / inlaw, live-in etc) any suggestions could miss the mark...
