Its hard to find a business admin job 6 hours away , usually they want to interview you for a business job in an office, which is what I am looking for.. I'll be able to collect unemployment, basically I can leave when I want to its so slow around my job they are asking for voluntary layoffs. I assume most companies out in chicagoland dont hire someone for $20 an hour during a phone interview.. where are most of the jobs in chicagoland? maybe i should have asked that, yeah st. charles is nice but i wont live there if there is no business office jobs, or higher competition for them.

You are right nobody is going to hire somebody from 6 hours away when there are plenty of qualified candidates here. I doubt your girlfriend is going to get a teaching job in IL this year with all the layoffs. You either need to come here are start seriously looking for a job or find somewhere they are hiring teachers. We've done all we can for you.

Well she has applied for 10 or so jobs in Illinois, southern Wisconsin and northern Indiana and its still early in the game yet (school doesnt start til the end of Aug/beginning of Sept), so we are going to see if she gets a music teaching job this summer. Teaching jobs although people are being laid off, are still being posted and I realize it may be harder to get a teaching job then it use to be in Illinios but Michigan has an even worse education budget and we want to leave this state anyway.
As far as the question was earlier, I was curious where most people work in chicagoland, I assume some suburbs have more jobs then others and are growing with more jobs then others?

My daughter is a teacher with hefty student loans. From what she tells me, if she teaches at a low-income (title one?) school for 5 years, she can get a substantial discount on the loans. Is this something your girlfriend is participating in, too?
If so, the job opportunities for her may be broader.

My daughter has 2 Master's in education and curriculum. She is a special ed teacher who one day plans on being a dean. She was cut from a low-income district high school when she was due to be tenured because she was making too much salary. Funny, the principal is doing everything he can to get her placed somewhere else and she comes "highly recommended."
Anyway, she now has two job offers, one at a charter high school in Chgo and one in the south subs.

JMO, but I think your girlfriend would be wise to go back to school for certification to teach a broader range of subject matter than just music. Typically, there could be just one music teacher that travels between 3 different schools (which is how it is in my district), whereas there are 7 classes per grade across our district. It seems to me that the only positions that are actively hiring in any district are athletic/P.E. teachers. She may as well use her time out of work productively and further her education to open up opportunities. Otherwise, she may be out of work for a very long time.

Yeah she was considering going back to college and getting more of a specialization, but out of state tuition is alot, and the last thing we want to do is stay in michigan another 2-3 years.. we like it near chicago, she may have to just move if she does not find any teaching jobs, that way we will already be in the area if she needs to go back to school and she could get in state tuition after awhile. She is looking in wisconsin, indiana, illinois and even florida as a remote posibility for a job, and if none of those work out with heavy applying, which would be a shame if you ask me, then we may just end up moving near chicago after fall or next year. Being in our mid to late 20's, we really dont want to live in Michigan for more then we have to.

Coincidence, my girlfriend just got a music teaching job in Berwyn (directly out of school). Unfortunately for you guys, she is only the third person in her class to get a job (and she graduated from a great school- UIUC).

Well with her experience at a couple of different schools, creating a program at one, and having a really good gpa and letters of recommendations from places we are hoping she gets hired somewhere in chicagoland, southern wisconsin or northern indiana..
