Dear everyone,

I've browsed around the forum and couldn't find a thread similar to my problem, although I'm sure it is common. At any rate, has anyone attempted finding a second job at 50 years of age? I'm looking to supplement my income, as I will be renting at a higher rate now (circumstances).

Currently, I work as a technician. I am very familiar with the NW suburban area (Palatine area), yet somewhat lost as to its job market. I guess this is what happens when you stick to one type of work, hope for the best, and try to be a single parent.

Anyone have any suggestions as to where I should even start looking? I'm open to many jobs, though at my age, it will be harder I suppose. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I was a little younger. I worked in the food business most of my life, then went back to school at 43 years old. Became a nurse at 47. Best thing I ever did.

Sophia, so interesting that your first post on the boards is about finding a second job!!!! And from complete strangers who know nothing about you as well! Your lucky though..... I'm serious here.... I am a mind reader....And I believe the best job for you would be as a burger flipper in fast food either before or after your 1st job has started or ended. If early morning hours is your preference and there are no burgers to make, I believe my voices are telling me egg poacher on the griddle at the same restaurant.

What sort of technician are you? Automotive, computers, HVAC, home security? I guess I'd pick something somewhat related to your past work experience for an easier transition into a new field. Either that, or pick something that you have some knowledge in from your own personal interests and hobbies. Do you like gardening, working on your car, doing projects around the house, tinkering with computers, photography?

Try to narrow down your personal attributes and combine that with your personal/work experiences. Do you have any personal or professional acquaintances willing to take you on and mentor you in a new field? Networking helps a ton. Browse through careerbuilder.com and see what sorts of positions are hiring that might interest you.

Anyways, best of luck. If you combine things that you're good at, have some related experience in, and a desire to do, you'll have a rewarding and fulfilling job.
