I think Captain Nemo's subs on Ashland and Waveland is pretty good.

Eleven City diner, on Wabash between 11th and Roosevelt, makes some pretty good sandwiches, especially corned beefs and reubens. Clark Dog, Wellington and Clark/Halsted, has a really good philly. Another one that you may or may not consider a sandwich: Salud, a Mexican restaurant on Milwaukee in Wicker Park, makes an amazing torta--it's a sandwich in my book, but again, maybe not everyone

Philly's Best at Jackson and Halsted (there's another on Belmont east of the Howard El) makes a cheesesteak which my wife (who's from Philly) considers authentic and better than some famous places in Philly. I think it's pretty good too.

Panozzo's at 13th and Michigan is an Italian deli that makes excellent Italian subs.

Only two or three of the restaurants I've mentioned I've eaten in the Loop. Some of the others are examples (while available downtown, as well) are places I've eaten at the other locations. But I believe that the best sandwich to be found won't be a large chain, but some local spot that might only have one or two stores.

Here are two other places I've tried:

Corner Bakery - A little pricy, but I like the pretzel bread.

Galloway's Chicago Subs - Found in Algonquin. Decent sandwiches, kind of like a Quizno's.

There are, of course, other places I've tried to get gyros, Italian beef, hot dogs, etc., but that doesn't necessarily go under the category of Deli Sandwiches. Granted, some places will serve deli sandwiches, even if that isn't their specialty (ie. an Italian sandwich at Gino's East).

Thanks for all of the quick replies, everyone. This certainly gives me a bunch of new options to try out.

Any recommendations if Lucky's in Wrigleyville is any good? The Travel channel recently visited several restaurants (Gino's East, Al's Beef, and Lucky's Sandwich Works). I've been to Gino's (meh), and Al's (bah), but haven't tried Lucky's yet.

Actually, for a guy (or gal) who eats often in the Loop, he (or she) has missed a *GREAT* deli, go and try it, I am in love with their food...

I was going to suggest Vinny's! Good call! And the lady behind the counter (can't remember her name but I think she is the owner too?) is about as nice as can be...I like Vinny's way better then Bari...you can break a tooth on Bari's bread but some people like that..

This is expensive, but the Torta I had at Xoco last week was freakin' amazing.
