In a few places I've lived, there have been more than one energy supplier to choose from, even at the same residential address.

I move into Marina City tomorrow and am wondering if there's an alternative, possibly cheaper source for electricity than Comed (which is the standard in Marina).

Thanks for any information!

Short answer -- NO! The City of Chicago has a "master franchise agreement" that guarantees them exclusive ability to sell electricity to residential customers within the City. A few years back the City played like it might allow alternative arrangements but then the chairmen of ComEd ponies up enough campaign-- er , ah, promissed that they would address concerns about reliability and maintenance after a big sub station blew up and everyone lived happily ever after, especially Blago if you know what I mean...

Welcome to Power2Switch | Search. Switch. Save.

That company is an energy broker, and will allow you to purchase your energy supply from any number of different companies. However, a few things to consider: 1) your savings probably won't be much at all, because although you are buying the energy cheaper, ComEd still owns the delivery system, so you'll still have to pay ComEd a fee for use of the wires, and 2) in the event of a power outage, who do you think gets service back the quickest--the ComEd customer or the other guy (although that really isn't an issue for you if you live in a large multi-family building where most of the people are ComEd customers.

Another one: BlueStar Energy Services. This one is reputable, and has been named one of the top new businesses in Illinois by Inc. Magazine. Here is their website:

Thanks for that as well, Lookout!

I love that Bluestar actually puts their current $/kWh rate on the website. Not a bad rate, either ($0.069 til October, looks like).

Anyone happen to know what Comed's residential rate is currently?
