Just wondering. I constantly see them driving around near Oak Park Avenue and Harlem, not by Austin. Often times, I will see a group gathered at the 7-11 near the Oak Park Avenue green line stop. There is no real reason for them to be in downtown Oak Park other than that it is much more pleasant than doing work in Chicago, particularly the Austin neighborhood.

I see them in downtown Oak Park, over by River Forest all the time. Nice to see our taxpayer dollars put to good use. I see the same thing in Elmwood Park where all these cops are hanging out at the restaurants along north avenue, but this is admitedly closer to Chicago.

Probably because they have less fear of getting shot at while trying to enjoy a simple cop of coffee, or have less fear of their food getting spit in. Unlike regular jobs where most people can enjoy the little things, Cops have a constant real fear of harm coming to them even when trying to enjoy something like a break. It's not a joke when it's said Cops feed gets spit in. I could post plenty of stories when even worse things like broken glass or rat poison has been put into food. Cut some over worked under appreciated guys some slack. If they want to enjoy a cup of coffee, destress for about 15 minutes and have to look over their shoulders a bit less for a minute, give those guys their time. They are still tied to the radio and will respond to calls. Or it's possible some of them are on their lunch break (yes cops aren't robots that operate 8-12 hours a day that deserve a lunch time too) and are not tied to calls.

Edit: Avengerfire is right too. They might be detailed out to that area

If you were working in the Austin neighborhoood or some other far West Side hell hole, where would you go on your break? I'd be in Oak Park every day of the week.

I've seen Chicago cops at Portillos in Forest Park by Desplaines Rd. Oak park I could see as it borders Austin, but Desplaines Rd, that's right by 1st Ave.

It's only about 2 miles out of the District. Hey, there are those days you just gotta have Portillo's There's only one Portillo's actually in Chicago, and that one is close to downtown.

They also go to the Chipotle at the Brickyard alot. As others said, if I was a Chicago cop working in Austin, I'd go to Oak Park for lunch too.

This is impossible. There is nowhere to get a cup of coffee or decent food in Austin! That's why you see a lot of CPD officers in Oak Park. There is no place else for officers working in Austin and West Garfield Park to go. This has been the case for as long as I can remember.

Another factor is the fact that the border used to be a crime draw. i.e. Perform a crime in Chicago, run across to Oak park and unless it was hot pursuit the police could not chase you. Having them able to work a few miles into the burbs helps control crime in the area. (i.e. They can spot and arrest someone without hot purist). If I remember correctly there is an agreement between Chicago and oak park allowing the cp and the oak park pd to work around the border.
