So I just noticed that the vacant commercial building next door to my apartment has been leased for the purpose of establishing a church. For a couple reasons, I want to stop this: 1) the location is very near several daycares and a public elementary school, and 2) I don't want the hassle of the increased traffic, flyers, harrassment, etc that comes with a church.

Does anybody have a suggestion on how to prevent this. Would my alderman's office be able to help? Or am I just SOL?

Do not live in a city with 3 million plus people then.

Try living in Marengo or something.

I doubt that you will get anywhere with the "near a day care center and elementary school" line of reasoning, after all these are church goers, which in theory ought to be more regular than folks shuffling into a bar or liquor store...

Churches are almost certainly a permitted use in the area. It would take a lot to get an alderman to block that. Now if you could show that another tenant would generate more campaign donations...

But seriously, you can make your concerns about parking known, but I gotta think the landlord has been over that, and there are ordinances against leafleting, so unless the harassment is something that would violate other city ordinances you are probably barking up the wrong tree.

Daycares, a school, a church----Holy Christ, sounds like a neighborhood. That's bad?

You might have a legitimate issue parking wise, in which case if your area is not already zoned look into zoning it. There are areas on the south side that are zoned for parking because of a large church without enough parking.

And on a lighter note perhaps the author could find a liquor store or an adult book store looking for more space to bid on the location?

I have no problem with that. My neighborhood needs a few more liquor stores and a porn shop for sure. This is the Chicago not Dubuque.

No offense to Dubuque. I like that town.
