The age of fossil fuels is coming to an end. The age of scarce water becoming more valuable than gold is upon us.

Could one make a compelling argument that as the capital of the Great Lakes region, Chicago, already a global powerhouse, may well be one of the most critically important cities on the planet here in the 21st century?

All this when rising temperatures means rising sea levels and an unquestionable disaster for coastal cities like New York?

It will likely have an impact I think, but probably not anything major in our lifetimes. It just makes too much since for the Great Lakes region to thrive in the long run given the resources. Chicago and other cities around the Great Lakes may benefit, but who knows to what extent? Maybe Buffalo is the capital of the Great Lakes in 2300 forming a mega region with Toronto? It's tough to predict the long term future.

As far as coastal cities being ruined by rising tides, I don't think that is a likely scenario. If NYC were to ever be in danger of getting flooded something would be built to hold back the water.

In the short term Chicago needs to make sure those Asian carp don't get into Lake Michigan.

"They'll be fine, because Lake Michigan is a lake. (SEAGULLS). It's 600 feet above sea level. It's a sort of elevated ocean. This could be important someday."

Hey, I was AT that taping of PHC. At Ravinia. It was during that huge cicada hatching.

Carolina! How I've missed you!

I've got my leather boots on. Prepare yourself.

By the by, coincidentally, has anyone taken a look at some of these boards? I happened to wander through the Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia boards. All I can say is, they were frightening.

Oh Coldwine. You spoil me with your threats of sewper lewd violence.

And yes, some of these boards do get a little creepy. Check out the "preparedness" board or whatever it's called in the general forums. More discussion of the best ammunition to repel attackers in a Mad Max post-disaster world than you can shake a stick at.

Chicago is sitting on the edge of 20 percent of the worlds fresh surface water. That is huge. The Great Lakes Region is the fourth largest economy in the world.

I have my fingers crossed... Would love to own real estate in one of the most critically important cities on earth... Though recent scientific advances in desalination process and nanotech water filtration may solve many fresh water shortages...
