Hi! Everybody knows about the 909 of the LA area. It's a backwater white trash subculture area of the metro that gets a really bad rep and stigma. What do you guys think the Chicagoland version of this is? I would have to nominate Kenosha due to having so much in common with the 909 as you see tons of white trash and your token lifted pickup trucks. What do you guys think?

That sounds like all of LA.

You mean the Inland Empire? No, not "everyone" knows about it, and its most direct analog in this region would be the far southwest suburbs -- which similarly have an economy based around trucking and sprawl.

I would say the SW suburbs and parts of NW Indiana (south of Hammond/Gary). Maybe some areas up towards the WI border, but Kenosha is not considered part of Chicagoland.

I will tell you they are not really like 909ers though. More like Midwest style rednecks. California style white trash is definitely a unique breed.

Glad I wasn't the only one with that gripe. "Everyone"? No sir.

Furthermore, why do you assume that there is a direct equivalent, and that Chicagoans would look at it and say "yep. That's our 909." as if anyone would aspire to equate their trashy area with LA's trashy area.

When I first looked at this thread title, I thought: "909? Is that like an 808?"

Agreed. Lots of MMA/extreme sports types that still live in their parent's basement, and have a gripe how that damn assistant manager is always busting their chops.

So, the "815"?

I think Kenosha actually is considered part of Chicagoland, odd as it may seem.

Actually Kenosha County is part of the census defined area of Chicagoland. I would say the area most similar to The Inland Empire is Naperville/Aurora, but Chicagoland doesn't really have any suburbs as economically and ethnically diverse as the Inland Empire. Parts of the Inland Empire more closely resemble rough parts of the Southside and Westside than anything in the suburbs. I might also nominate Northwest Indiana.
