I was a kid in '67 and my mom and I pulled a sled with my brother on it to get groceries. Weather forecasting was not nearly as sophisticated then so they had no idea it would be so bad. Snow is fun when you're kid, but when you are responsible for the snow removal it can be a big hassle.

Good thing I got groceries last night. The roads are NASTY. I took me an hour and fifteen to get from Edgebrook (Touhy & Caldwell) back to Albany Park. That's an average speed of less than 7 miles an hour.

That, and the fact that I had to park 3 and a half blocks from my building, because a) half of Wilson cannot be parked on (rush hour traffic ordinance) and b) other people smarted up to using the streets w/o the ordinance to park and not move their car. FFFFFUUUUUU.

The walk down Irving Park Road from the Sheridan "L" stop to the lakefront at 6 p.m. tonight was one of the worst weather experiences I've had in my three-and-a-half decades of life. I had to stop several times to take shelter in doorways, especially as I got further east. At one point I lost footing and got pushed backward. I think I may have also experienced my first frostbite.

The wind is really the problem out there. It's just terrible.

Smile A different kind of delivery

My dad always would tell the story of how my mom was ready to give birth to our brother and couldn't get to the hospital - it was in the middle of the night - 1960 - she got there in a snowplow!

She was a trooper!!
