The area around S. Dorchester St and 53rd..??? Is this a safe area..? I'm asking because I've accepted a job in south chicago and I'd love to live near the city or even some what close to it but it's pricey. If anyone knows any cheap apartments in decent areas in south chicago.. lemme know.

Thanks.

That's Hyde Park, and it's fairly nice, although isolated a bit.

You mention not wanting to live in a pricy area, yet Hyde Park can be pricy.

Yea I've heard that but I found a relatively cheap studio there compared to other parts of the city, it seems like it's impossible to find a decent studio south of the city for a reasonable price.

Have you checked 1 BR's in Bridgeport? You'd be a heck of a lot closer to good times and public transit (orange or red line) versus Hyde Park. And, commuting to South Chicago is right down 94. I was renting a 1BR garden apt for $610 in Bridgeport last winter.

You can consult the Bridgeport threads for more information on the neighborhood. Nothing has changed much in the last year, I'd say. It's probably one of the nicest neighborhoods on the near southside, or even the southside in general.

I've found that there are very, very few rentals in Beverly and Mt. Greenwood on the southside; they're also not really close to night life either. And in my opinion, South Loop will definitely be too expensive.

As long as you don't mind old buildings..and I mean 105 years and older, you'll be fine. My apartment was at the bottom of a three flat and was fairly updated. The only crappy thing about these types of apartments is that they have Gas-forced air for heat- basically a heater on the wall that forces air from a flame to heat up the apartment. I'm sure you've probably seen these in Pittsburgh as well.

And, most of these places have no a/c, which you've also probably seen in Pittsburgh.

And what is that price?

$540 is not a lot of money, and I would suspect a studio renting for that much to be somewhat dicey.

I rented a $499 studio in Joliet, but it was absolutely disgusting, now that I think about it.

That area is pretty safe by big city standards and has good transportation. Its also close to restaurants and to food stores. Parking around there is obtainable on the street, unlike other areas.

You should know that it is across the street from where Barack proposed to Michelle. Also, there is a Dunkin' Donuts diagonally across the street so cops frequent the area.
