I think Oak Park would be one of the better suburbs to live in as a young single. It isn't the city but it isn't far from the city. I would live close to downtown if possible. There are quite a few restaurants and bars. Not as many bars/pubs as in the city but there are a few.

The Near West Side includes the West Loop, but it also officially includes a far greater area per the City's definition.

Yes. You could be over in the ghetto near the United Center and be in the Near West Side, but certainly not in the West Loop!

If your in the near west side and walking distance to Ogilvie, you're in the West Loop.

The bars in Oak Park suck.

66K for an entry level job? Life won't be tough, - you got it made. My first job out of college was $10/hr. Only 16 years later did I make $68,000 / year. Now I think I can't get another job like that. Don be sorry for yourself, you can get spoiled on $66,000 a year.

You can easily afford West Loop on $66K a year. You will have no problems. Obviously the choice is yours, but I would go with West Loop, providing walking distance to Ogilvie. Check the METRA train schedules just to make sure the trains run at the time you need.
