^What would give me more cause for concern is how little he has saved. I know the general advice on here is to have 4-6 months of living expenses saved up. There's no way I could do it without 3 months. I'd have panic attack every morning I think.

But I'm also super type A ...

I suppose you could live anywhere then.

But anyways, this seems like a bad idea - moving somewhere without a specific job field or job in mind, to a place where you have nowhere in mind in which you could live.
Makes life exciting to jump in sometimes at random, it reminds us that we are alive.

The main problem is not his area he wants to work in, it is the size of Chicago and how competitive ANY job is. Doesn't matter if he is in sales, restaurant industry, or works at a machine shop. Getting the job in this economy is going to be rather difficult. If I were the OP, he is close enough where he could interview for jobs first before moving...

OP this is what I would do, get a job lined up first, you are close enough to do so, it would be almost stupid if you didn't given you are so close and able to do this from where you are now. I understand other people moving from across the country don't have this ability moving to chicago or new york or boston or sf anywhere people just want to go to get away from where they were from... but OP you are so close (AGAIN) that you can be searching for jobs in Chicago right now and then drive up for the interview.
