I am looking to move to Chicago or one of a couple of other cities I'm considering. Chicago is definitely my first choice as far as the school and atmosphere goes. However, I have a pitbull-looking dog and I want to make sure that wherever I end up will also be good for her. I haven't been able to find a lot of information on this matter. I'm sure it's out there and I'm just looking in the wrong place, so I thought I'd ask here. I'm hoping to rent somewhere close to downtown. Where does the city stand in regards to breed specific legislation? Are there any surrounding cities with breed bans? I'm not big on dog parks and won't be walking my dogs all over town, but I'd like to be able to board them and walk them near my home without getting a ton of looks and negative comments. I know I should expect that kind of thing anywhere, but here in Austin it's not a huge deal and pitbulls are fairly common. I'd like to move somewhere with similar views. Thank you for any insight!

You might have a hard time renting near downtown. Many buildings don't allow dogs and many of those that do have breed and size restrictions.

I don't think the city itself had breed restrictions.

At some point the city/county was trying to make certain breeds illegal. But I never heard it passing. But all does must be leashed in the city or major fine.

Just tell everyone your dog is a boxer. Or an American Bulldog, not a pit bull. American Bulldog

Thanks guys! That's what I was looking for. I currently live in Austin, in an apartment, and have had no issues with calling her a terrier/bulldog mix. She does look like a bull breed though. If there aren't any breed bans that I might accidentally walk into then I'm sure I could find a home, apartment, etc. that will rent to me.

Are bully breeds, specifically staffies and pitbulls, common near the city? How does the city in general feel about them?

American Staffordshire Terrier

Just "re-frame" your dog...in Miami Pit Bulls are illegal, but not any other bull dog breeds. I went out the other day, and saw a dog that WAS a pitty...but the owner swore the dog was a purebred "American Staffordshire Terrior"...whatever...

Such dogs are often looked upon here as being low rent. They are more common in lower end working class neighborhoods and in ghettos than in upper end working class neighborhoods and middle class neighborhoods.

I'm not making a value judgement of you; that's just the way it is.
