I can't imagine a portable dishwasher being more convenient than 5 minutes washing max 3 plates, 3 cups and 3 forks and maybe a pan or two!

Also don't take an apartment you haven't seen in person, I realized you're not here yet.

Using paper plates cuts down on dishwashing too. Old Chinese secret.

I actually think they are better for the planet since less water is used to make them than to wash dishes. I could be wrong though.

I've seen some 'environmentally friendly' ones. They're brown.

Those must be recycled or not bleached. The bleach is not necessary. But anyway...back to the topic.

honestly, even the second place seems a bit too expensive for your budget. if you're getting paid around $2500/month, I wouldn't spend much more than $800-$900 (and $900 only if some utilities are included) on rent per month. it's fully possible to find a one bedroom in this range, but you may have to sacrifice on location and amenities, and possibly dedicated parking.

1100 is a good price for a 2-br in that neighborhood, but I think a 2-br might be a waste of money as it is. If you have a use or need for an extra room and/or spend a lot of time around home and would like the comfort of additional space, you might consider it. A larger apartment means a higher utility cost as well. That looks like a nice place, but a comparable 1-br for $900 or so is probably your best bet.

I have a portable dishwasher and I love it. It's easy as hell and hand washing sucks in winter.

I certainly think you can get a NICE 1br in chicago in the 900 range... maybe not in lincoln park but... wouldn't want to live there anyway... you can do it! Search harder.
