Post your advertising again. I don't think anyone saw it the first time.

for getting around the city a $400 hybrid will suffice. It is efficient enough for plain pavement riding but has an upright position and wider tires for a less competitive but somewhat more comfortable ride (though it sucks being upright in the wind). If you want to hang out with the hard core bikers though you will want a full on road bike. An older used one might be had for $400.

If you can do your own mechanics and know your size bikesdirect is a killer deal. Otherwise visit the Local Bike Shop.

Sorry, hearing that song at Mouse World has scarred me for life.

I do about 100 miles a week on my hybrid and wouldn't trade it for anything. The last thing I think about 99.99999 percent of the bikers in Chicago need is a really fast road bike. Many if not most of them are not even smart enough to follow basic safety, like, you know, stoppnig at lights.

The fact that so many wannabes get their fixies and pose like hardcore bikers is the goofiest thing I've ever seen and possibly the goofiest fad to hit major urban centers since disco. Again, about .1 percent of those people are qualified to ride those bikes, and those barely.

I think a good hybrid is an ideal bike for the vast majority of people in Chicago.

I rode around for a while on a mountain bike converted to 'hybrid'. It was pretty simple to change out the tires for skinnier 'road' tires (26 x 1.25) and made the ride A LOT more enjoyable for commuting.

I found that for commuting long distances (20 miles round trip, per day for work) I needed more hand positions and better aero for windy passes. Which is why I started riding my SS/FG more (which had flat bars, then bullhorns, and finally back to drops - which the bike came with).

I see that you ride roughly the same amount as me, RingWalk. I'm surprised a flat bar has worked out for you when riding that much.
