I am in the planning stages of making the trek back to Chicago from San Diego. My girlfriend will be coming with, but she is currently in San Diego States' Social Work program. Does anyone know how difficult it is to get into this program at the University of Chicago? Do they only offer a graduate degree in Social Work or do they have a BA program? Also how difficult is it to get started in that field in Chicago? Any info will be helpful

Thanks

I think the school of social work administration (SSA) only offers a MSW. It may be possible to get a BA at UofC but more likely in sociology than in social work.

You should note that the current director of the dept of children and family services for the state and at least one Chicago alderman graduated from SSA. In other words, it is a well thought of program. Like most of the University of Chicago, it is no walk in the park to get admitted. However, there are many jobs in the social work field in Chicago. At least I think so. Plus, entry level jobs in that field tend to be very low paying.

You might also look into University of Illinois at Chicago. Social work and interacting with the surrounding community is a big part of its mission.

UChicago's SSA program is highly ranked among social work programs -- both in quality and admissions -- and, yes, it's a graduate only program. Chicago is usually pretty generous about allowing undergrads to register in graduate classes, but not in "the professional schools," of which SSA is one. Plus, few undergrad degrees at Chicago are "pre-professional," the notion being that an undergrad at Chicago is being prepared for not a career, but for... graduate school.
