I see this argument all the time as if it's supposed to be some kind of assurance and comfort, and my response is always the same: if you live on a block where gunplay is a common occurrence, are you more likely or less likely to know people who engage in gunplay than if you live on a block where it never happens?

I've also noticed that the people who use this argument almost always live in nice safe neighborhoods. If you don't have to worry about being shot or stabbed or whatever by someone you don't know, why pay a lot more money to live in a cozy little enclave instead of in da 'hood?

Well, I guess most folks worry about what could happen. It seems like the crime of homicide surely is not what is most likely to befall a victim. As to living in the 'hood, it seems to continue to befuddle people on this forum that folks get along quite nicely for years in areas some here would shun.

There were 448 homicides in 2010-11, 13 fewer than the year before .... 230 or half of them occurred in the neighborhoods listed.
Now that handguns and shotguns are legal in Chicago the homicide rate will magically decrease, at least that's what the NRA says.

So the statistics mentioned really have little applicability as to residential habits of individuals. Which is what this forum is about.

Folks here also tend to ignore single digit posters.
High homicide counts in a neighborhood or suburb are symptomatic of larger, deeper problems. It is reflective of lack of respect. If you have a larger percentage of people who will splatter someone's brains all over the alley during an argument over a dice game, you'll probably have a higher percentage of people who will have no qualms about beating the living crap out of you to or putting a gun to your head to get the $37 in your wallet. And so on. I bet if we list community areas by other violent crimes, the list will come out roughly the same.

IMHO people who post pictires, names and addresses on social networks and on forums are more likely to be stalked than someone who does not. It is impossible to determine who someone is without a clue or access to personal records.

Because it's kind of cliqueish, just like high school. Just post when and where you want to and let the chips fall where they may. I like to mostly read because every now and then you can find some really useful information. Looking for personal validation on a message board is not adviseable. Another thing, the board is touchy about violent crime in Chicago. This unfortunately has always been part of the landscape since the city was founded, but posters here like to focus more on the many better attributes of the city and metro area.

It's amazing that half of the murders occur in just these 10 neighborhoods. It's a shame that South Shore shows up on this list. That neighborhood has so much potential.

it's not that this board is cliqueish, it's that 60% of the stuff posted is garbage.

And the reason people probably ignored this guy's post is due to the fact that it too, was poof. Anyone and their dog can get basic information like that. He says he has good stuff to offer, but he really doesn't.

How about an analysis from an angle people haven't seen? Or something worth reading?
