Hello

As per Google maps, U.S. Cellular field is just a nine minute drive from Englewood. Based on my reading on this forum, I know Englewood is pretty much a no-go area, but how's the area around U.S Cellular Field? A 9 minute drive might be the equivalent of about a one hour walk or thereabouts, so someone leaving a ballgame isn't going to accidentally wander into Englewood, but if I wanted to explore the immediate neighborhood around the ballpark sometime, would it be safe to do so?

Thanks!

Unfortunately there's not much of an "immediate neighborhood". The park is surrounded by parking lots for quite a ways and if you go East there's the expressway followed by IIT and more parking lots. Don't go South, it's not Englewood, but just don't go there. You have to go a ways North to get past the rail yard, and there isn't a lot there either. If you want to check out a neighborhood head West. I go to bars over on Halsted sometimes and have never had any problems. If the Red Line stop is crazy after the game you can always take the State St. bus North without any trouble. After games the usual areas I go to are either China Town (to eat) or Printer's Row (to drink). Bridgeport and Pilsen are both worth checking out as well, depending on what you're looking for.

I sometimes use the Green Line as an option if the line for the Red Line is a mile long. The Green Line is a couple blocks farther east.

By the way, don't overlook the neighborhood between the rail yards and the Dan Ryan a couple blocks north of the ballpark. Its nice and quiet. I had a friend who used to scope out that area for free parking on game days but as the years went by the city made more and more of the spots restricted. Now we just use the CTA.

Be sure to check out Grandstand Sports at 35th and Wallace, a couple blocks west of the ballpark.

Englewood is the least of your worries. Read this, and tell me who you should fear?

I know, I know - "The neighborhood has changed now..."

That happened 14 years ago. How relevant is that today? You must have not been to Bridgeport in a really long time if you bring up that article.

Let's see, as awful as it is, that's one beating in 14 years. And over those same 14 years, how many hundreds of shootings have occurred in Englewood, and how many innocent people have been hit by a stray bullet? Even if I was black, I think I would still rather take my chances in Bridgeport instead of Englewood.

Thanks to everyone so far for the info. Just a follow up q: I spotted a place called "Kevin's Hamburger Heaven" not too far from the ballpark, at the corner of West Pershing & S Wallace. I'm huge burger guy. Is this place any good?

It gets mixed reviews on Yelp.

Some one forgot to tell this home seller (http://www.myfoxchicago.com/dpp/news/metro/george-wilborn-family-bridgeport-whites-blacks-couple-refuse-sell-home-20100826 - broken link)that things were supposed to have changed in Bridgeport... And this only came to light because the purchaser is famous in Chicago.

Sure, Wilborn didn't get beaten until mentally retarded, but the mentality in Bridgeport still exists. I'll take my chances on a random walk down 63rd & Halsted before I take a nighttime stroll trough Armour Park.
