I know I know, these lists are kinda dumb, nonetheless interesting. According to this website: America's Rudest Cities: Major Metros Top The List, Chicago only ranks #15 in the rudest city category, while LA and NY were #1 and #2, respectively. Some cities I was surprised to see were ruder than Chicago included: Baltimore, MD; Memphis, TN, and Dallas, TX. Thoughts? Are Chicagoans being misconstrued here as being too nice or too mean, or do you think that's a fair ranking?

At least the list wasn't made by Forbes.

I think people in NY are characterized unfairly as being rude. On one hand, sure, everyone is in a hurry and have a tendency to be brusque, but brusque does not equal rude in my opinion. I think if you're in a crowded city, living on top of each other, it requires a special kind of tolerance. Sure, you might get an "I'm Walkin' over heah!!" here and there, but in my experiences in NY, somebody bumps into you, they say "Excuse me" often before you do and move on.
Also, the #15 tag for Chicago may well be total BS as far as I'm concerned. One of the reasons I wanted to live in Chicago was my in experiences visiting, the people were friendly and approachable, and of course there are exceptions, but the prevailing attitude I have encountered has been friendly and helpful.

So why post a thread on it?

Because I've never actually seen a list on this particular topic, and I wanted to hear posters' thoughts on whether they thought it was nonetheless accurate.

I've always thought Chicago had a rep as being a pretty friendly big city?

Yeah, that's why I thought the #15 ranking seemed fairly reasonable. My experiences indicate that you are going to get an element of rudeness in any large city, which is why I think it's on the list, but Chicago manages to keep it pretty friendly considering it's the 3rd largest US city.

I have NEVER found people in Chicago to be rude. To the contrary, in my experience, they go out of their way to be helpful.

I have found that the rudest people in Chicago are the suburbanites who come to visit Chicago because they are so close to the city. I know that was a run on sentence. But it got my point across.
