I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time in different cities while I was growing up, and tried living in a number of cities when I was in my 20's. I ended up in Chicago and don't see myself leaving, ever. If I did have to leave for some reason London or Bangkok would be at the top of my list.

I understand why people wouldn't see obvious similarities between London and Chicago, but I think they are very similar (except for difference in cost of living). The main question is - what part of London are you looking at? Inner boroughs (like the City of London) are not like Chicago, but as you get out to the parts of London that developed in the 1800's (which is the majority of the city) it starts to have a lot similarities to Chicago. London had massive population growth in the 1800's, a little ahead of Chicago's, but in the same general era and for many of the same reasons. Both cities grew as industrial centers and have working class roots that are still found in the city's character. Both have similar population densities.

I have family in Shepherds Bush, spent a few summers living there in the 70's and 80's, and have been back to visit many times. That part of the city has great similarities to Chicago for me, as do most of the traditional working class neighborhoods of London.

Interesting to see The City (AKA San Franscisco) be so popular. The place does have a certain "Chicago" feel to it, believe it or not.

Kind of a strange list. I picked London, but in reality if I were to move it would be a San Francisco, Seattle or Boston type of town.

Well there are many cities on that list which I consider superior than Chicago, but that does not mean it would make sense for me to live in them. Cost of living and the international factor of course are major factors. If I had to realistically pick I guess it would be NYC. In fantasy land it would be Paris.

For me, Sheperd's Bush was similar to Berwyn.

Ha! Much better bars in Shephard's Bush tho' (and many more Kiwis). To a degree I kind of agree with that, Berwyn isn't all that much different from many neighborhoods in Chicago either. The majority of London is not St.Paul's and Westminster, just as the Majority of Chicago is not Millennium Park or the Michigan Ave.

My pic would be Paris but only if I could live there in another life as a French person. Realistically I'd probably go to NY or LA.
