I have more money now to get a place. I was hoping to find a large unfinished place if possible. Like a warehouse, or an old factory floor. Some kind of commercial use area that may have been built up a bit by other artists before me, but that I can build up in a way I want it to be. Hopefully a very large place. My friends in college had a lot of places like this, and I had some friends who had a place like this near Fulton Market.

How do I find these places? I look in the apt. section of Craigslist, and it has no places like this unless it's totally built up. In the Office/commercial section of Craigslist I rarely get places where they allow you to live and work. Most are only work, so that probably isn't the best place to look either. If not Craigslist where do I look for these type of spaces, and even more important what are they called officially in classifieds, now? A large unfinished live/work space for artists or filmmakers.
Thanks for any help.

Check Pilsen or the west loop.

How large are you looking for? When I moved here I found an 1,110 square foot loft in the west loop for $1300/mo. It would not have been suitable for a live/work. I know they have live/work in the south loop across from the china town water taxi stop - they explicitly have signage for it on the outside of the building.

I'd love more information on this if anyone has some input. Been looking for similar loft-style apartments for a long time with little/no success.

Try a commercial broker instead of normal apartment listings.
