Has anyone recently driven from NYC to Chicago, preferably along I-80? I'm moving back to Chicago and am trying to evaluate the cost of pro movers versus DIY.

Obviously DIY is ultimately cheaper in terms of truck rental but I need to figure in other incidentals like gas, food, tolls, etc. I know I-80 is one toll after another - I just can't recall if it's a couple bucks per toll or more.

Any guesses are much appreciated!

OH turnpike is $10.25 and the IN turnpike is an additional $4.65. I just did them last Thanksgiving, over the river and through the woods. I don't think you have to pay on the George Washington Bridge on the way out. There may be a toll at the Delaware Gap, I can't remember.

The Ohio turnpike, while not negligible in terms of truck tolls, doesn't care so much about your money. It's more interested in corrupting your soul.

Everything, if he wants an uneventful move. The Ohio Turnpike senses Ryder and U-Haul trucks, and swallows them whole. Sometimes, it just gives them a flat tire at 9 PM on a Sunday.

Thanks for the insight! And for what it's worth, I think the PA portion of the drive is incrementally worse than anything OH can throw at you.

I think I'm going to leave Brooklyn via Staten Island, even if it is out of the way. Two years ago, I did not enjoy driving across midtown with a moving truck and I certainly don't think I'll find it any better on the way home!

If you leave from Brooklyn why go thru staten Island? That means the Verrazano Narrows, the Goethals and the Jersey pike before you get to I-80. Take the BQE to Triboro and then over the GWB. I think that way may be better.

@Manigault: Thanks so much! I never really considered other options b/c I've only driven twice since I've been out here - once across midtown and once through Staten Island. But your route is surely much better!!!
