We own a Border Terrier in a 1.5 bedroom apartment and he works out great. We have a rotating schedule that will allow one of us at home with him through the day at least three times a week. Either myself or my fiancee. The downside is since he is a terrier, he is a barker. So that can be an issue. During the days we are gone it can be upwards of 8-10 hours. But he is either in a kennel or a very puppy proofed living area. And after a year, an extremely happy lil guy.

As for the dog walker, it would be a great idea if you have the money to spend. If this is a route you wish to take, depending on where you live, you may be able to befriend a local walker at your dog park and talk to them often to get a feel for them. This way you wouldn't have the strong reservations in "handing your keys over to a random person" as one will early on.

The main thing is make sure they are legit walkers and not a part timer. Trust me, at the park, you can point them out. They stick out and are generally very friendly and observant. And since this is their primary job, they will go above and beyond for you and would never intentionally harm your home while picking up the pooch, as this would destroy their career.

I just wanted to add... You may not realize it now, but after you get the dog it will become a big part of your life. Not a bad thing. I just mean you will become VERY attached and for most dog owners, this decision has been one of the best they have made. Ourselves included. And you will find that you could live without a dog before getting them, but after having one you'll wonder what you could do without them. For us, our dog might as well be our child.
