Any place a tourist would ever have any reason to go (with the *possible* exception of a blues club in a 'sketchy' part of the south or west side.. would've also put the United Center at 3:00 a.m. at one time, but it's probably not such a biggie anymore ) is going to be perfectly safe. If you've never been to Chicago before, I think you'll be surprised by the large numbers of 'normal' people (of all races - residents, tourists, etc.) walking around all over the place after dark in lots and lots of parts of the city.

Same goes for Hispanics. Make sure you avoid the northwest and southwest sides as well. I would recommend just parachuting into the loop from your plane, to be honest.

A lot of this depends on what time after dark because other than Oak/Rush/Division...a couple of blocks in Old Town...Lincoln Avenue...parts of Clark and Halsted Streets...I never really thought Chicago was ever really sidewalk busy at night and during the day actually.

Compared to DC (where I live now) it is. (Well, DC minus college [and just-post-college] kids getting drunk in Adams Morgan and the vicinity.)

I can't believe you guys are telling the OP to waste cash on a cab. Unless the OP is disabled, elderly, obese, or traveling with children who can't carry their own bags, the walk from the blue line to anywhere on the mag mile shouldn't be a problem, especially if the OP is taking the later flight!

Regarding safety, pretty much anywhere you'd want to visit as a tourist is going to be safe. The L is very safe as well. You will probably see some homeless sleeping on the trains at night, but they won't bother you.

Im flying into O'Hare and am planning on using the 'L' to travel to Clarke.
Its a late sat night flight, is this a safe option?

Many thanks for any help.....
You are safe on the trains. They are well policed all hours. Most of the areas along the lakefront are safe. Be careful about venturing too far away. Few tourist want to see the slums anyway. If you are a male, the only thing I would tell you not to do is to wear a baseball hat that is tilted right or left. If you wear one, wear it with the bill straight to the front or rear only.

If you're going to have a few bags, maybe worth considering just spending the 40 bucks and saving the time.
Only if you are rich. At 9PM the trains are running fine. They do not go into owl schedules until around midnight. Save your money for a good meal.
