Hallo everybody.

I'm sorry if this question has already been discussed. I moved to Chicago recently (yesterday as a matter of fact). I'd like to get my wireless inet at home. what would be my standard providers? in LA, for example, verizon would be my first choice.

Thanks a lot

RCN and Yahoo are not doing wireless at the moment. Verizon and Sprint/Nextel are the two big players right now.

Can't you buy a wireless router and make anything wireless? Or these specific companies wire your for wireless?

I just turned my aunts DSL (yahoo) into wireless....

That's for a local network only. He's talking about WiMax which is basically broadband wireless using the cell phone tower network. You don't need to be near a WiFi router or "hot spot" to use it. You just have to be within cell range. At least, I think that's what he's talking about?

That's the impression I got as well. OP is looking for mobile internet providers for use in his/her home.

In which case the same 4 as everybody else has are available here. Verizon, AT&T, T-mobile, and Sprint.

If OP is looking for wired Internet to be used with a wireless router then OP needs to list at least the zip code because not all providers are available in all zip codes.

That said, AT&T and Verizon are your best choices because they let you buy data in set quantities and let you use it how you want. That will be unnecessarily pricy though and I would recommend going with wired internet.
