the DuSable Museum website might help you get a feel for this:

DuSable Museum of African American History

Add to this list: King Drive, Western Avenue (not a "boulevard", but passes through many different types of Chicago neighborhoods of all races, giving you a good feel for the city), and Garfield Blvd.- if you're comfortable in the 'hood, as it passes through arguably the worst neighborhood in the city. Although I wouldn't wander off of the boulevard as a visitor.

Are comfortable walking/driving around in the hood. Chicago is not your typical urban setting, it is a war-zone and thugs in Chicago do not play around... they will shoot you dead for your ipod. So unless you have some important research to do... why risk it?

47th Street from State to Cottage Grove. It's in Bronzeville, and this street was the black downtown for some time.

18th Street from Canal to Ashland. It's a Mexican neighborhood called Pilsen.

Ashland from Chicago Avenue to North Avenue: West Town, mostly Mexican, gentrifying quickly but this strip hasn't gone upscale at all so far. The side streets around here are nice, too.

I recommend Albany Park and Humboldt Park for more latino areas, but I couldn't tell you what are good streets to check out.

In HP, the Paseo Boricua is worth checking out. The Giant Puerto Rican flags that bookend the street are important landmarks to the Puerto Rican community.

I'd also recomend East 87th Street and 79th. And East 71st between Stoney Island and S.Shore Drive

I suggest eating at this place...

MacArthur's Restaurant - Fine Southern Cuisine (5412 West Madison)

You'll see parts of the city that most will never see and have good smothered pork chops.
