You know, I've always said Chicago got a raw deal compared to Minneapolis. We may have Lake Michigan, but they got a Norwegian community!

No Indian goes to Devon anymore they land up in Naperville.

Just like the disappearance of Japantown and Koreatown it wouldn't surprise me if apart from the need for cabbie joints if "Little India" would also disappear in time.

Koreatown is not gone and there are still plenty of Indians on Devon.

Yeah there are over 100,000 of them in this state. The difference is there is no specific Phillipine Town or nothing. So they are kind of invisible despite they are the second or third largest Asian ethnic group in the state. It doesn't help that many have hispanic names.

Out of all the Asian ethnicities in Chicago, only the Chinese have a neighborhood that is ethnically theirs. A walgreens with Chinese writing, a bank, Chinese newspaper, and a 90% Asian elementary/middle school. Too bad it can't really expand because of the expressway, but East Bridgeport sort of fills in as Little China part two. Devon Ave. is maybe the center of Indian restuarants and shopping, but the neighborhood itself is ethnically mixed. Koreatown/Lawrence Ave is half or more Mexican/other latino.

I didn't even know Chicago once had a Japantown.

Not "meant for," but is it so bad if they do? Is it really so sinister to want a wider variety of tasty and possibly exotic chow?

Try this mental exercise to explore the bounds of black ethnic chauvanism at the voting booth: Imagine if Obama were a Republican. Then ask yourself if he would have had near the support of the AA community.

Japantown used to be centered around what would now be considered the southern part of Boystown and Wrigleyville. Some of the sushi joints that line Clark Street are holdovers from the last days of Japantown that got a second lease on life when sushi became a trendy cuisine. My best friend's (who is of Japanese descent) uncle still lives up there and still pays about $350/mo for his apartment due to a long-term lease arrangement that I guess was common among the Japanese inhabitants up there. It's also how my friend came to be a Cubs fan despite growing up in the south suburbs -- his dad grew up in now-Wrigleyville and passed his Cub fandom down to his kids.

As far as I know, the Toguri Mercantile Company is still around up there at Belmont and Clark. It was operated by the most famous of the Tokyo Rose figures, Iva Tigori, after her release from prison right up to her death about 5 years ago.

Pretty much true. Though I have an interesting anecdote for you:

At my old place of employment, I was one of two white people on my sales team of 20. My cubicle mate was a black man from Gary, IN. This dude would rant all day about how George W. Bush was a great man, and how he DID not hate black people.

This coworker also went on to detail his disgust on black people and how he hated them. WTF?

It reminded me of that old Dave Chappelle skit of Clayton Bigsby, the blind black klansman. I usually laughed at this guy at the expense of our other black coworkers disgust and stares.

So no, Obama wouldn't have the support of blacks if he was a republican, but you never know, with black hating blacks out there.
