Hi there. I did a search but couldn't find the answer to my question.

I'll be driving through Chicago later this month, from the Indiana Toll Highway heading toward Rockford. Mapquest and AAA both tell me to take I-90/94 through Chicago and take the I-90 fork when the two interstates split. I know Chicago traffic won't really be pretty at any time, but what afternoon hours would you suggest driving this part of my trip? I really have no choice in driving there during afternoon hours, but I can be flexible with my time by 2-3 hours.

Thanks in advance.

If you are heading toward Rockford I would avoid going through the city and perhaps even avoiding the skyway because of traffic issues in the loop. If you can take 80/94 which turns into 80/294 to 294(toll road) north....you can take 294 north and connect with I90 west toward Rockford. This route should connect you with I90 within 25-30mins

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it!

I'm afraid right now you don't have any good options. I-80 is torn up and the backups are awful. I-90 takes you right through Chicago, which may or may not flow smoothly in the very early afternoon; I can promise you it will be hell in late afternoon.

Isnt it actually 355? And then turns into 294. Cause you can take 80 to 355 to 294 but its essentially one long interstate...

No you can take 80 to 355 to 290, but I was trying to avoid the construction on I80 which has more construction than 294 right now

Ah okay we are thinking on the same terms of swinging around the city though. I came in on a Saturday night from the Indiana 4 weeks ago (came from florida because of spring break) and we spent over 2 hours in traffic right on the part of 90 that has an incline and then pulls down to the right. Essentially by all of the exits for navy pier and ohio street. Ridiculous!

If you are going to take I-80 to I-294, headed toward Rockford, you might as well hop on I-290 West at Hillside. It is more direct that following 294 to O'Hare airport
