Hi Friends,

I'm moving to U. of Chicago for graduate school, and my friend is going to be enrolling at the U. of Illinois-Chicago. We're considering to room together. So, I'm wondering how is the commute like b/w Hyde Park and UIC?

Thanks!

Not fun. Hyde Park to the Loop is fine, but UIC is just far enough south and west of the Loop that there's no direct transit route; it would require going downtown and then transferring to one of the less-than-reliable east-west bus routes like the 7, 12, or 60. (And if s/he is going to West Campus [medical], that's even further.) It's probably not a bad drive, though, and certainly a doable bike ride.

However! You could move to the South Loop, which is between the two campuses and also better connected to the rest of the city.

If you are driving it is managable maybe about 30-40 mins on average commute from either hyde park or from around UIC.

If you are driving it is pretty reasonable. 20-30 minutes.

I can almost always do it in 20 minutes. The best route depends on where in hyde park you start and the time of day that you leave. If you pick the wrong route it could take 30 minutes. 40 is hard to imagine.

I agree with ajolotl -- so long as you are not in peak rush hour this is a pretty easy drive with a far number of ways around clogged expressways.

That said I would be careful about lving too far out from either school as, depending on you work load and desire for socialization with other students, the opportunities to be at either campus for required events might add pressure to a pretty hectic lifestyle.

If younger both serious students and won't be frequenting night spots you might find someplace like Pilsen a better and potentially hipper choice than South Loop which is kinda overbuilt and characterless in many places.
