Post office machines used to give them as change. I don't know if they still do, though.

That's what I was going to say also; I used to think it was funny to buy stamps with a $20 bill and then use the dollar coins to buy stuff for the rest of the week. Unfortunately I think many post offices have been eliminating those machines in favor of new ones that only take credit/debit cards.

If you're bank can't help you with this you need a new bank.

Maybe the Federal Reserve Bank downtown can help.

In my experience, it's very difficult to get them in banks. Usually the tellers scramble around, ask everyone behind the counter, and finally determine that they don't have any.

The Postal Service has removed all vending machines after gangs learned that a photocopied $20 bill would return 19 dollar coins, some change, and a stamp.

That's why I suggested FRB. If OP works downtown it should be very easy to go there. I once went there with a 75% of a dollar bill and got it replaced at some window in the bank somewhere. I would think if any bank is going to have them it would be them.

Where there is a will there is a way to beat the system. Remember Neco wafers in the tollbooths?

You can usually get them in any Loop branch of a bank. I like to get $2 notes (I think it is fun to spend them as tips or to pay for cups of coffee) and they always have them at the Chase branch on Wacker.
