I moved here in December. I know the city well because I've visited Chicago almost every summer of my life since infancy- always in summer. My girlfriend is visiting me in late April/Early May and I was hoping the trees grew their leaves by then because the city looks so much nicer. No big deal obviously, but she already visiting in February and I just wanted her to see the city in a different light.

So when does it typically happen?

Once it gets warm enough on a consistent basis. It varies from year to year. I think this year we will need until mid May for the trees to have all their leaves growing.

The trees are in bud right now. A few warm days and you will see small leaves emerge and a light greening effect. I'd say it will be nice in a few weeks...early May there will be leaves. Full leaf effect does not occur until later though. The nice thing is that there might be some trees blooming like crab apples which is very pretty.

I just thought I should throw this in. It has been snowing/sleeting in Chicago (at least in my neck of the woods) the last few hours. That should tell you all you need to know about blooming this Spring.

Yeah, I woke up and trudged to my car to find slush blanketing the entire thing. I hate April. :unamused:

My magnolia is getting very close to blooming, but we're going to need some higher temperatures. It doesn't look like we'll see 50 til at least Friday.

I was out all night. When I got home all the cars, grass, roofs, and garbage cans had actual snow. It must have warmed up just enough before you got up to turn it into slush.

Walking around Lake View and Lincoln Park today I noticed some leaves starting to sprout on many trees. It shouldn't be too long until they're all green. Every year it seems to happen very quickly and catches me by surprise.

Basically the trees will not progress much further until the weather warms up. Its been running twenty degrees below normal. Once it hits the high fifites and sixties the leaves will start coming out more. Just wait, you'll see.
