I am looking for a 1 bedroom in the south loop area for $900 - $1100. Don't need parking but would like to be close to public transportation. Is this even possible? If so, what's the best buildings?

1100 might be doable, but even that might be on the low end. Then again I haven't really checked out prices in that area in a while. Look at craigslist or the Chicago Reader. You'll have an answer pretty quickly.

Check with Castle Keepers and Rubloff. Ask specifically about the Dearborn Park mid- and highrises. Because they don't have balconies or in-unit washer/dryers, they can be good bargains.

I looked at a place at 26th and Indiana right off Michigan Ave last time I lived in the city. I know, a little further South than the "South Loop" but not more than a few blocks. Hospital directly across from the building. I saw a place on the 20th floor facing the City. Best view I've ever seen!!!! That ran for $1100 1 1/2 years ago. Forgot the name of the building but if you venture down there you'll see it. It's a condo building so you'd have to find an owner who's renting their unit out.
