As I plan my future exit from Florida- I must plan a new life which may include applying to an MSW program at one of the public universities in metro. Chicago. So far I am thinking UIC. However- I am a "non-traditional" student as I am a mother of 3 which leads to my next question- where to live? Preferably somewhere I can take public transit to and from school and SAFE area? Open and flexible but I do need a 3brdm home?! Where to start??

Yes that is an option- I'd like to keep my kids out of CPS. I heart OP as well.

Forest Park your kids would go to Proviso, I rather would stay in CPS
There are options for knowledge programs where your children can attend Magnet schools. I know Bridgeport has Mark Sheridan Math and Science academy, just a thought. In Bridgeport there are plenty of Catholic Schools your children can attend as well.

Oak Park has good public schools and is a close commute to the UIC campus. I have known people who don't feel safe on certain parts of the UIC campus at night when walking alone. For the most part, it is safe when you look at the incidence of serious crimes vs. the overall student population.

Do you really think it makes sense to pursue a program in an notoriously low paying field that is highly dependant on governmental hiring when both the Feds and the State of IL are facing massive budget cuts??

It makes sense for her. If she wants to do it, let her go for it, MSW's can work in a broad array of fields.

Just seems between moving expenses, general turmoil of relocation, and overall grim prospects for employment for those with any kind of Social Work degree that this is more a pipe dream than a plan...
