I recently moved to the city and I’m working for a large corporation, I hate my job. I have a lot of nonprofit experience from when I worked in NYC, although the pay is low, I loved my job. At the moment I can’t stand a 40 hour work week, but when I did not profit, I did voluntary 80 hour weeks.

I know the economic climate is rough; I have money saved and plan on getting my Master’s degree. When things come around, is Chicago a place I want to be for a nonprofit career? When I look on nonprofit job boards, I don’t see too much out of Chicago.

Any advice?

There are many Association's in Chicago for various things; many of which maybe non-profit. Some I know of are:

Chicago Dental Society
American Medical Association
Illinois CPA Society
gosh it's been so long since I've seen the names that is all I can come up with.

This one was always a tongue twister...American Association of Nurse Anesthetists but I don't remember if they are Chicago based or not.

In Northbrook there is Underwriters' Laboratories. If you can get work in the labs can be very interesting!

Plus there are many museums too. There is a publication of non-profits I believe maybe the Chicago Library can help you find a copy.

YMCA of America is a good organization to work for and are located locally. So is The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association of America.

There are a lot of non-profits in Chicago, however New York and Washington are really the bi-polar centers of nationally- and internationally-influential non-profit life in the U.S. Most other big cities have at least a few important non-profits and their share of local agencies, but NYC and DC really dominate for big players, for obvious reasons (U.N. headquarters and being the Capital, respectively). And like any other business, since they have a lot of the big players, former employees tend to "spin off" their own non-profits just like former employees in other industries tend to start businesses in those same industries, so it sort of feeds on itself in NYC and DC for that reason, even when it comes to local agencies.

Thanks everyone. It becomes a catch 22, the best non profit jobs exist within two of the most expensive cities in the US. Iliac the idea of chicago because compared to New York, Chicago is reasonably priced. I want to devote my career to non profits, however, i still need to eat.
