So, I'll be making a long weekend out of the 4th of July weekend with the wife. We'll be staying downtown. I heard rumors that Grant Park isn't going to be setting off fireworks. Will Navy Pier?

Other recommendations for 4th celebrations?

And since I haven't really lived in the city (or visited often enough, sadly) since 12 years ago, I really don't know what's new or what's to see anymore besides nostalgic stuff.

The wife, being from Japan, is not interested in the nostalgia as much as much of that is in my old stomping grounds.

ANy other recommendations for visits for an expatriate Chicagoan?

Navy Pier will have fireworks.

As for what to do, what do you and your wife like?

Navy Pier fireworks will be at 9:00pm on the Fourth. Navy Pier will also have their standard summer Saturday fireworks on 7/2 at 10:15pm, though I expect the show on the Fourth will be quite a bit bigger.

And if you want to be on the Pier itself, you better know to get there early. But there are probably plenty of places along the lakefront that you can get a good view of them. For example, you can probably still get a pretty good view from the area just south of North Avenue beach.

Well I made all my plans. Sounds like the Pier will be busy as expected, but no one was taking reservations. So we'll go to the old home neighborhood and see some family friends and then drive downtown back to see the fireworks. This works for me since I don't feel like waiting 2 hours for a table of moderately tasty overpriced stuff.

Final question ... what's this business about the flash mobs of black kids beating up white folks for electronics? Should I just write this off as yet another "unlikely to happen to me" thing? Or should I really reconsider being in a hotel downtown two blocks off Michigan on the north side?
