A lot of us obviously don't have the flashback issue, but most of us who have lived outside of the fully gentrified neighborhoods have dealt with this before. It's just unfortunate that the 4th fell on a Monday w/ people returning to work the following day. I've dealt with 2am stuff. Some of my more interesting moments in past years:

-Watching kids flag down an ice cream man at 9pm going through Noble Square to get him to stop. They were decoys. Their older brothers pulled a car up and fired at the poor guy from 3 sides with bottle rockets and much bigger stuff. It was a classic ambush. Ice cream trucks have surprisingly small turning radiuses. These were unfortuately my neighbors at the time on Augusta. Cops were called and never showed for this either.

-Wondering what two guys were doing near a dumpster when riding my bike by the area, coming home from an all-day BBQ. Then I realized the two weren't messing with an M-80, but a full stick of dynamite. Dumpsters are surprisingly resilient. Their tops are not.

-Seeing kids shoot off stuff at each other, only for a stray firework to land in a bucket full of unexploded stuff. A small miracle there were only superficial injuries and no building fires (bucket was in a recessed patio 5 feet from a wooden 3-flat).

-Being on the receiving end of kids in the middle of a firework battle riding down the street.

At Midway Airport last night, I was amazed - and somewhat concerned - at all the aerial pyrotechnics going off within blocks of the airport. This just can't be good near an airport.

Stop whining about fireworks! It's the 4th! I got the pleasure of spending it in DC. It was fantastic. And the best part? Nearly everyone (including my boss) was either hungover or working on little to no sleep. We got to cut out pretty early that day.

My neighbors across the alley were exploding something in the alley next to the dumpsters on the 4th. I came out and asked them to be careful with my new vinil garage siding. The woman (mother of the three kids that hang around) ran at me like crazy saying that her brother is in Iraq fighting for me and that I should keep smiling, since it is the forth of July and she has the right to do that. Gosh. for "her biggest holiday of the year" she goes the garbage dumpsters and hangs out there with explosives and all her family, and they claim their constitutional right to do that. how pathetic and depressing. We made some grill and laid a table outside but it turned out to be a really upsetting evening for me and my husband. I hate these "alley" fireworks. So barbaric.

I did two stints in the sandbox and fireworks make me wince and cower. I was driving back from the Michigan Dunes on the 4th and the Hoosiers were shooting fireworks off right next to the highway to show off. Everytime one exploded I would duck, I could not help it, it was instinct. I'm just not a big fan of explosive display.

I think it's funny how there are stores that sell fireworks right there on the east side of State Line Road. It's more like going to Calumet City than really truly "coming to Indiana".
