Target Corp.'s ubiquitous red bull's-eye will grace one of Chicago's most famous buildings. The Permit Review Committee of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks on Thursday approved Target's request to allow the bull's eye to be viewable through the Sullivan Center's picture-glass rotunda windows at the corner of State and Madison streets.
Target will lease 124,000 square feet over two floors of the building, constructed in 1899 to house a department store. It now mostly contains office space.
The national landmark, designed by famed architect Louis Sullivan, was the home of the Carson Pirie Scott department store from 1904 to 2007.
The Sullivan Center is famed for the cast-iron decoration that wraps around its base and the huge ground-floor picture windows that allow pedestrians to see the goods being sold inside.

First Marshall Field's, now this. I hate that Macy's. Better than sitting empty I guess but just barely.

MI Ave is also turning into one giant cheap store after another.

Target is paying for the space and should be allowed to advertise as they please.

Personally I miss Goldblatt's, Wieboldt's and the Sears on Homan far more than Field's.

That may be why retail rents on MI Ave are near all time highs.

Target will bring a much needed Chic department store compared to a ghetto ridden Sears

That's because giant chains are the only ones that can afford the rent.

I haven't notice all the cheap giant chains. Do you expect every shop to be a boutique?

It's something that's happening all over, not just Chicago, but also in London and NY, what were former more unique luxury retail zones are being taken over by stores like H&M, Forever 21, Victoria's Secret, Zara, Top Shop, Best Buy and All Saints, among others.

That may not mean anything to you but I guess one way to look at it would be to imagine if Wal Mart took over the first few floors of the Hancock Tower.

The worry, to the degree there is one, is that there becomes little to differentiate it between your average mall.

Ok, now I get your point. The homogenization of shopping. Yep, it's a very global phenom. Capitalism at work.

The "unique luxury retail" has just been pushed a block or two over, it's still there.
