We're roughly on track to end 2011 with fewer than 400 homicides. That compares to over 650 homicides in the early 2000's, and more than 900 homicides back in the early 1990's.

I think Chicago and Philadelphia are the two extra-large cities that are most susceptible to having their reputations ruined by all these destructive and disrespectful "trash mobs," and having 25 years of positive momentum (15 years for Philadelphia) wasted in the process.

I estimate alarmist media reporting is up at least 50%.
Homicides are down, but other types of crime (such as flash mobs, hate crimes, gay bashings, burglaries) are up, or, are at least up in areas that have typically been relatively safe.

God this is a stupid comment. Crime is down across the City. 8.8% drop in violent crime and a 2.4% drop in property crime. The only two categories of crime that are up is burglary by 0.8% and a huge increase in stolen vehicles at 17.6%.

What's a gay bashing? A gay guy getting bashed over the head? An organized anti-gay bashfest? A straight guy at Sheffield's calling his straight friend a *** for blowing a pickup opportunity? Whatever they are, how do you know they're up?

LOL - did you all see the hyped story in the Tribune called "Pedestrians in the Crosshairs" or some such thing?

If you actually go to the study it turns out that pedestrian/car accidents have been long declining, and that Chicago is actually rated 14th in accidents - not too shabby considering we're (I think!) still in the top 3 as far as population is concerned.

Philly has been getting national attention due to the flash mobs in the past week. Not sure about Chicago

Because I live in a gay neighborhood and I attend the CAPS meetings and the police tell us that, in this specific neighborhood, hate crimes (committed by anti-gay hang bangers) is UP, muggings are UP, etc.

Two gay guys in my building alone have had their faces smashed in, while walking down the sidewalk, by packs of thugs who walk around late at night. And on saturday, 15 gang members jumped a gay guy at Broadway and Buckingham at 6:45 PM. This type of violence has been going on in lakeview on an almost nightly basis since Memorial day. The crime levels in Lakeview are UP, PERIOD. The Belmont and Halsted corridors have been under an intense crime wave all summer long. More police have been deployed, and the criminals shifted tactics there for a while, moving off halsted and belmont, over to the side streets.

You are never going to get the accurate stats from the alderman or the mayor. You have to read the bulletin on the chicago police web site to get the true stats, and to attend the CAPS meetings.

Crime levels "city-wide" might be down, but that is a statistic that is easily distorted or misunderstood. Homicides might be down, and crime in general might be down, but in lakeview, certain types of crimes are UP, there is no way this can be denied. Those of us who live here know the truth.
