I don't think this is always true. I take a cab for convenience after bars, not safety. Just depends where you are and where you are going.

I take them for both, but safety should always be on your mind whil walking home after a night of drinking, late. Just look at the two irish girls, for one of many examples, it was only 11:00 they were on Damen near North Avenue, a *safe* area.

You have one major advantage in Chicago: cabs are quite cheap there, as opposed to Boston and NYC; I was astonished at how far you could go for so little money, if you had to...

There is always a random act like this.

I rarely take cabs. The only time I take them is when the bus stops service for the night or I am too drunk to walk home from the bar.

Most months, zero. I'm just too cheap to take cabs. I'll walk or use public transportation.

Last time I took a cab was in February 2010, and it was out in the suburbs. I took a cab from the Barrington Metra station to a friend's retirement luncheon at a restaurant in Hoffman Estates. Ride cost me about $20 and I had to arrange for the pickup in advance. Fortunately for me, another luncheon attendee offered me a ride back to the train station, so I didn't have to cab it on the return trip.

Before that, I hadn't cabbed it in probably seven or eight years.

Safety would be my number one concern...especially not being from the area.

Probably $100 a month at the most. I almost always take a cab home from the bars late at night and sometimes if I am running late to get somewhere, but aside from that I don't use cabs.

It all depends on where you live and where you're going. I live in Uptown and I go out in Lakeview for the most part. One reason I like cabbing home after I go to the bars is because it's only $7 and it saves time. $7 for me really isn't a big deal to throw down at the end of a night.

The one under Bloomingdale? That was at 3:30 a.m.
