So my boyfriend and i found a place in pilsen. It is on a mainstreet (18th and racine ) how is that area as far as crime and general safety?
I am 21 years old i want a place that i can feel safe walking from my car to my house, and we also have street parking so i want to have a bit of comfort my car is safe. I also want to know how safe we will be walking from the blue line stop to our home.

Default Re:Pilsen

Hi, my husband and I are in our mid 20s and we have been living in Pilsen for over a year. (18th and blue island) I absolutely love it here. Yeah, there are projects down the street, and yeah, there is the occasional gang fight a 16th and blue island under the tracks, but for the most part, the only thing that we've had to worry about is discrimination. We've been harassed a few times because we're not latino, but I've had relatives in the area since the early 40's, so I usually let them know that and ask how long their relatives have lived here, and they shut up pretty quick. Regardless, it's a great neighborhood with lots of families and open space...I wouldn't live anywhere else.

Or as I like to say, you can always ask them to think real hard about why their neighborhood is called "Pilsen" and not "Guadalajara."

it is kind of ironic, isnt it? my grandmother came from bohemia when she was young and her family settled there. that was a HUGE bohemian/czhech enclave.

24th and Oakley has a decent size Italian population there and that is considered part of Pilsen. Thats where I would live if I moved down there.

ive decided against it, im not rascist against mexicans but i would feel more comfortable being somwhere more with a more diverse population..i dont know spanish for the life of me so i think id feel akward often. i am also afraid of being anywhere near a gangfight. your talking to someone from appleton wi, the only gangsters we had were the white wannabes. i love west town thats where i want to go, or stay in little italy...i love hearing everyone talk they have such amazing accents.

No it isn't. Why do you think there are predominantly black areas and white areas and mexican areas?

People don't like to be the outsider, no matter the race.

How is a neighborhood comprised of almost entirely one ethnic group "diverse"? What about the meaning of the word diverse (stuff that is not the same) is not understand here?

Because people are scared of skin color and others who are "different"?

Anyway, its not the best neighborhood and I wouldn't blame anyone for not moving there.
