Twelve North American cities made the list. Five are Canadian and seven are America. Chicago is ranked higher than NYC. Only Vancouver was in the top ten. It tied at #4 with Auckland, New Zealand - which will make my Kiwi friend very happy to hear.

Canada:
#4 Vancouver; 14 Ottowa; #16 Toronto; # #21 Montreal; and #28 Calgary.

US:
#31 Honolulu #32 San Francisco; #37 Boston; #45 Chicago/DC; #49 NYC and #50 Seattle. #55Philadelphia; and #61 Dalllas. #72 San Juan, PR.

Canadian and US cities are strongly represented at the top of the eco-city ranking, both for this region and globally. Calgary grabs the top spot globally with a score of 145.7, closely followed by Honolulu (score 145.1) in second. Ottawa is in third position with a score of 139.9 and Minneapolis follows in sixth place (score 137.8).

Eco-City ranking is based in part on the level of service directly related to waste removal, sewage systems, water drinkability and availability, coupled with relatively low air pollution.

#1 City to live is Vienna,Austria and the #! Eco-city is Calgary, Canada.

Interesting the #1 eco-city is in Alberta, basically Canada's version of Texas.

Interesting list. Chicago should be higher than NYC, it's significantly less expensive.

Calgary is really only like Texas in that they are oil economies.

Sure, but there is a big difference between mostly white, insular and provincial small cities in Switzerland or Scandinavia vs. Toronto/NYC/Chicago... night and day.

Geneva is nice, but I would be bored after 2 days there.

Vancouver's ranking is impressive...

I would not choose to live somewhere based on this ranking though, many more important things

That may be for Calgary specifically, which maybe makes it the Austin of Alberta. But your average Albertan pretty much considers himself Albertan first, Canadian second, and only acknowledges the latter somewhat begrudgingly, and generally wishes Ottawa would just go away and leave them alone.
