I currently live in Indy and have been offered a job in Evanston in the tech sector. Currently making 52500 offer is 70000 in evanston. It is exactly what I want to do, but I know rent is much more in that area than in indy. Currently renting a 2br 2 ba with 2 dogs for 1k. What does similar housing in Chi cost?

Totally depends on where you live.

Absoutely depends on where you live. I definitely don't think you're going to find something comparable for the same price in the area, though. I'm fairly certain a 2br/2ba condo will rent for close to $1500 or so.

Evanston itself is a beautiful town. The advantage is living really close to the lake and very close to Northwestern University. Who wouldn't want to live close to one of the best colleges in the country?

Otherwise, you can easily live in Chicago and commute via the red/purple line.

You can check out stations and connections to red line and go from there.

city living will be fairly expensive if you expect to live somewhere with 2BR/2BA and pets.

Evanston is a great place with lots of apts. Check out the rentals on Craigslist and other sites.
Perhaps you could downsize to a 1br? Keep in mind some buildings don't take dogs or only take 1 and the weight can be a factor.

You could certainly live in Rogers Park, a neighborhood in Chicago south of Evanston. Some parts are sketchy but parts by Loyola Univ tend to be ok and nice beaches/lower rents.

You can get a 2 bedroom apartment in Evanston in the $1200 to $2000 range, depending on how luxurious you want the apartment to be. Assuming the job is in the downtown area of Evanston, I personally would find living in Evanston to be ideal. I lived in downtown Evanston for 3 years and I really liked it. I will probably move back to the Evanston area if/when I sell my house.

If you are going to live in the city, I personally would pay a premium to live in one of the nicer neighborhoods. You will probably want to look at places along the red/purple lines in Lincoln Park or Lakeview (again, this assumes the job is in the downtown area and you'd take public transit/walk to work). I'm not a person that likes to drive to work though... traffic makes me feel crazy and there is no good expressway access to Evanston. For me, public transit is the only option; while there are many people who drive, I find the traffic and time wasting too annoying. At least on the train I can use my computer or read so I don't feel like I'm totally wasting my time.

I lived in Evanston and hated the commute into the city. It was just really long. Evanston is a pretty awesome place. You might be better off living there, but if you'd rather live in Chicago, you could try for northern neighborhoods for an easier commute.

If you want to save money, you could get an apartment in Skokie which is a cheaper (but very safe in my opinion) burb next to Evanston. If you plan to retain a car it wouldn't be an issue. You could also check out the more fashionable Wilmette immediately north of Evanston.

Personally, I would try to find an apt right in Evanston as it has the urban, eclectic energy and coolness thing going on..
