I think the best picture set in Chicago is The Public Enemy. It has establishing shots of the Loop, the Union Stockyards and Bridgeport but was shot on the Warners lot and in Los Angeles. Like the scene where Cagney picks up Harlow on "Kedzie" with a Bank of America across the street.

Yes, Northside 777 is one of the best older movies shot in Chicago, along with the Chicago scenes in North By Northwest (I actually stayed a few times in the Ambassador East because I was curious to see how it stacked up to the movie version--and it stacked up pretty well!). Also, among the older films are Public Enemy, which has been cited, and I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang, with many great scenes set in 1920s Chicago--and of course that unforegettable last scene.

I like "Hoop Dreams"

I also like "Medium Cool"

And plenty of others, but those two always intrigue me.

I guess I'll admit I also like "While You Were Sleeping," but then again I'm kind of a sap when it comes to romantic comedies starring Sandra Bullock.

"Running Scared" features Chicago pretty prominently. (One of thos movies I know is terrible but love it anyways)
"Mercury Rising" was another terrible movie that I watched recently, set in Chicago.
I should probably start a different thread about bad movies filmed in Chicago.

On a semi-related note: Anyone here watch "The League"? Great TV series, set in Chicago. Funny as hell. A lot of the street scenes seem to be suburban, but there's some good Chicago stuff in there too.

Default I know some people in The Fugitive

[quote=Frank the Tank;20602056]I'll go with The Fugitive. It's one of those movies that I end up getting sucked into every time that I stumble across it on TV.

I know an anesthesiologist and a vascular surgeon who played an anesthesiologist and vascular surgeon in that movie. The anesthesiologist has posted a picture on Facebook of the small royalty check he gets every year for his role.
